Is 5G just around the corner?

First there was 1G, 2G, 3G, and then 4G, and now the next frontier for faster broadband could be 5G. As smartphone users demand faster downloads and connectivity, 5G could be our saviour. Some of you may be thinking we’ve only just been introduced to 4G, which remains limited in some towns and cities.

Technology doesn’t stand still and is always changing, and the speed of mobile broadband in particular has been growing faster over the years. 5G is expected to provide faster broadband speeds, delivering greater coverage, reliability and performance, whilst also having enough capacity where ever you go to perform every function you want it to, without a drop in speed or connection, no matter how many people are connected at one time.

5G will be an improved network, designed to handle a large amount of devices. With this in mind, it may feel as though we’re heading towards a world where everything that could be connected to a network, will be!

The next question is, what’s the future for business broadband if 5G delivers on its promise? Well, since mobile broadband is susceptible to signal drops and peak time performance issues, the hope is that with 5G, this will be less of a problem, and instead much more reliable.

There’s also the advantage of it not being tethered to a fixed line, allowing the connection to be taken anywhere, therefore allowing businesses to issue the connection to their staff for remote access.

It’s expected that standards for 5G will be agreed upon and set by 2020.
