Keeping your internet connection safe

Internet safety is crucial and computers and smart phones are an integral part of a business’ working environment, as well as our daily lives. With all that happens on the internet these days it’s too risky to let your computer sit ‘naked’ on the internet.

Even if you don’t think you’re a very technical person, there are several simple things you can do to protect yourself and others working within your computing environment. Here at eZe-Talk, we’ve put together a few tips to help you and others working within your environment stay safe whilst surfing the internet.

  1. Integrate a firewall – Most computers already have an integrated firewall built into their operating system, Windows has ‘Windows firewall’ integrated and Mac OS X has an integrated one too. Firewalls are your first line of defence against an entire class of network-based threats that are constantly trying to attack computers. Those threats are prevented by having a firewall integrated, but it’s important to remember that they don’t protect you against everything, and will not protect you against things that you invite onto your machine such as emails, attachments, and removable hard drives and devices.
  2. Scan for viruses – It’s important to make yourself aware of the fact that viruses are able to cross the firewall and appear on your computer. A virus scanner will notice when they arrive and locate and remove them from your hard disk. Try to keep your virus scanner up to date every day! Enable the scanning software’s automatic update feature to allow for this.
  3. Scan for spyware –  Similar to viruses, spyware can arrive unexpected and unannounced, so it’s important to scan for spyware in order to locate and remove them. Remember to keep spyware scans regular and up to date.
  4. Back it up – This may not seem like a security measure but can often be one the most powerful ways to recover if you ever encounter a security issue. Ensure you have a back up of emails, contacts and documents – this is a handy way to restore data if you ever experience a security issue!

The good news is that the majority of the things that need to be done to stay safe on the internet are things that need to be set up once and often happen automatically.
